Relationship Between Vertebral Bone Mineral Density and Strength
نویسنده
چکیده
The relationship between bone mineral density and bone strength has been investigated as a ubiquitous property of bone. This study utilized 22 isolated vertebral body preparations which had their volumetric bone mineral density quantified and their compressive mechanics measured. Cadaveric baboon ninth thoracic vertebral body samples were investigated which ranged in age from 1 to 30 years and included both sexes. Isolated ninth thoracic vertebrae (T9) were subjected to compressive loading to document their compressive mechanical properties (yield load, stiffness, yield strength, and elastic modulus) and ashed to determine their volumetric bone mineral density. Maturation, sex, and species differences were observed for the stiffness, yield load, and vBMD. The vertebral body strength followed a direct relationship with vBMD regardless of sex, age, or species. This relationship (Strength = 35.3*vBMD – 1.46) demonstrates the association (r = 0.817) between vertebral bone material property and structure. These data support the biomechanical modeling of vertebral bone which is nonspecific for age and sex.

Discordance between Prevalent Vertebral Fracture and Vertebral Strength Estimated by the Finite Element Method Based on Quantitative Computed Tomography in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
BACKGROUND Bone fragility is increased in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but a useful method to estimate bone fragility in T2DM patients is lacking because bone mineral density alone is not sufficient to assess the risk of fracture. This study investigated the association between prevalent vertebral fractures (VFs) and the vertebral strength index estimated by the quantitative c...
متن کاملRelation between bone mineral density and serum ferritin levels in patients with thalassemia major
Background: Thalassemia/haemoglobinopathy is a hereditary disease with increased erythropoiesis and expansion of the bone marrow cavity. Consequently, there is a reduction in trabecular bone tissue resulting in osteopenia/osteoporosis. The present study was performed to determine bone mineral density (BMD) in children and adolescents with major thalassemia and its correlation with serum fer...
متن کاملPrediction of Human Vertebral Compressive Strength Using Quantitative Computed Tomography Based Nonlinear Finite Element Method
Introduction: Because of the importance of vertebral compressive fracture (VCF) role in increasing the patients’ death rate and reducing their quality of life, many studies have been conducted for a noninvasive prediction of vertebral compressive strength based on bone mineral density (BMD) determination and recently finite element analysis. In this study, QCT-voxel based nonlinear finite eleme...
متن کاملLow grip strength is associated with bone mineral density and vertebral fracture in women.
OBJECTIVES Grip strength has been reported to be associated with bone mass locally at the forearm and also at distant skeletal sites, including the spine and hip. Less is known about the association between low grip strength and risk of vertebral fracture. The aim of this study was to examine the association between low grip strength, bone mineral density at the hip and spine, and vertebral fra...
